    NEPAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
The Nepal Scholarship Program was established in 1989 at Fairmont State College (FSC) with the cooperation of the Association of Nepalis in the Americas (ANA) and the Association of Nepalese in Midwest America (ANMA). Since then, the scholarship program has received supports from other Nepali organizations, such as the Nepalese Associations in Southeastern America and the Florida Nepali Association, and over a hundred Nepalis and friends of Nepal in America and Canada. The Nepal scholarship fund for this program is managed by the FSC Foundation. Dr. Tulasi R. Joshi, a professor of geography at the college and the chair of the Scholarship Committee of ANA was instrumental for the establishment of this scholarship program. Presently he is the coordinator of the scholarship program.
Under this program, the college awards tuition waiver scholarships to deserving Nepali students, and the Nepal scholarship fund provides additional financial assistance to them and other deserving Nepali students studying at the college. The amount of the scholarship for each year depends on the contributions to this scholarship fund and its earnings. Since 1989, 12 Nepali students have received scholarships under this program. Eight of them have graduated from the college. Most of them have received recognition for academic excellence. In the Fall semester of 2001, 10 Nepali students attended the college. Four of them received the tuition waiver scholarships which have a total value of $14,200 (about 70% of the total tuition and fees) for the academic year. The Nepal scholarship fund awarded additional scholarships in the amount of $6,750 in 1998, $7,900 in 1999, $4,600 in 2000, and $3,600 in 2001. As of now, Nepali students have benefited over $82,000 in tuition waiver scholarships and over $23,600 from the Nepal scholarship fund, a total of over $105,600. In addition, they also receive other benefits from the college community such as work study. The current balance of the Nepal scholarship fund is about $20,000.
Interested persons may support the program by 1) informing prospective students in Nepal who desire to come to America for undergraduate education, 2) raising funds for the program, and 3) making a monetary donation to the program (it is a tax deductible contribution). Remember there is no better gift than the gift of education.
The donation categories for the program are: Sponsor -- $4,000 or more; Benefactor -- $1,000-$3,999; Founding Member -- $300-$999; Patron -- $100-$299; and Supporting Member any amount. Checks for this tax deductible contribution may be made payable to the FSC Foundation or ANA designating for the Nepal scholarship, and mailed to Dr. Tulasi R. Joshi, School of Social Sciences, Fairmont State College, 1201 Locust Avenue, Fairmont, WV 26554. For information on the program, please contact Dr. Joshi at the above address or e-mail: tjoshi@mail.fscwv.edu ; fax: 304-367-4785; phone: 304-367-4145 (Business) or 304-363-4122 (Residence).
