SEBS-NA's Official Position on Recent Events at BNKS
    Author: Hari Sharma
    Post Date: 8/5/2008
    To all the Members,
We, the SEBS members at North-America, are deeply concerned about the recent events at Budhanilkantha School. The recent broadcast about the school in one of the TV channels did no good to the reputation of the school either. We believe that every issue related to the school should be solved internally and there should not be media involvement in the internal matters of the school. Nobody should use the media to help achieve personal gains. Interests of the school should always be a priority. The school should take necessary actions against those who try to defame the school to further their self-interests.

We have read and carefully analyzed the demands of the Staff Union. While many of the demands are good for the school in the long run, most of them fail to assess the financial resources we have. Budhanilkantha School has to work with a vision but we have to consider the resources at our disposal as well. Staff Union members should not take advantage of the volatile situation to further their self-interest. Addressing the needs of the students should always be a priority at Budhanilkantha School. But at the same time, the school administration should try to address the genuine demands of the Staff Union where feasible. There should be a mechanism through which members of the staff, teachers, and students can put forward their grievances and have the authority take necessary actions. Transparency should be given a priority.

SEBS-NA strongly objects to some of the demands of the Staff Union which are neither in the interest of the students nor the school in general. In particular, the idea about introducing day-scholar system for higher levels is simply unacceptable. Budhanilkantha School has a long tradition and history of its own. Alumni members all over the world have a close bond even after leaving the school because we have lived our life together for many years at school. The hostel system is what makes Budhanilkantha School different from the rest. We strongly believe that we should keep the good traditions and foundations of the school while bringing in new ideas at the school.

SEBS Members at North America believe that the day to day administration of the school should be solely within the purview of SMT and as such, Staff Union or any other entity should not try to influence the decisions through external channels. SEBS-NA does not believe that a Staff Union is in the long run interest of the school and should ultimately be dissolved. We request the staff union and the SMT to discuss the various issues that have been raised and solve them internally. We believe that Staff Union and the school administration can come together and work in the interests of the school but if need be, SEBS is always ready to step in to save the face of Budhanilkantha school.

    Yours Sincerely,
    Hari Sharma
    General Secretary, SEBS-North America
