    SEBS-North America: Online and Social Media Guideline
    Author: Kaushal Sapkota
    Post Date: 5/31/2019
    SEBS-North America realizes the power of social media in fostering healthy discussion and a sense of community between Budhanilkantha School’s alumni and friends. Over the years, we have used social media for fundraising, outreach, and communications. We are grateful to all our followers and members for accepting our communications across different digital and social media platforms. Following on the statement we released on May 8 and the decision made by the Executive Committee on May 3, SEBS North-America decided to implement a "Social Media and Online Guidelines" to facilitate respectful online discussion. We request all our members to read through the guideline and support us in making our community safe, respectful and constructive. (On behalf of the Executive Committee of SEBS-NA 17-19).

    Social Media and Online Engagement Guideline for Members

    Online interaction tools, forums, and social media provide low-cost communication that promotes open exchanges and learning. SEBS-North America has used online platforms to enhance connections with its members despite geographic spread, fostered relationships and reached to diverse alumni. We recognize that our members have diverse opinions, beliefs, and experiences with the commonality being our connection to Budhanilkantha School. In the interest of being a group open and safe for members, it is important that alums are familiar with certain basic expectations and norms to be followed when interacting through online means.

    Be a Valued Member: Discussion, debate, and disagreement are expected and encouraged. We encourage our members to join online forums and discussions with the intention of contributing valuable insights.

    Respect Others: The best interactions are built on the foundations of respect. Avoiding inappropriate behaviors - attacking people, demeaning, belittling, threatening, using obscenities, promoting bigotry, biased remarks, and shaming - is key to maintaining respect.

    Maintain Confidentiality and Privacy: Do not post confidential or proprietary information without acknowledgment and permission from the parties involved. Do not share or discuss private details about an individual - includes name, date of birth, identification document details and/or picture.

    Be Aware of Liability and Personal Responsibility: You are responsible for what you post as an individual. Understand that what you publish and the post will be online and public for a long time - protect your privacy and integrity.

    Be Mindful of the “Collaboration vs. Solicitation” difference: One of the core objectives of SEBS-North America is to foster professional collaboration among its members. We would like to request our members to be mindful of the difference between a collaboration call and a business solicitation. The general expectation is to avoid business solicitation and advertisement in online forums of SEBS-North America.

    Retaliation to a Feedback about Harassment: Communications styles vary between people, however, it is not an excuse to harass people. Please be sensitive to this and follow cues reflected from feedbacks if your comments are perceived as hurtful or inappropriate. You may disagree, but keep in mind that, despite your intent, it is possible for the recipient of your comments to feel harassed. The general rule of thumb would be to avoid retaliation.

    Admit and Correct Mistakes: If you make a mistake, admit it, be upfront and quick with your correction and notify individuals directly influenced by the mistake.

    Moderation: SEBS-North America, manages, administers and interacts through the following online and social media platforms:

    i. Official Website of SEBS;
    ii. Official Facebook Page of SEBS-North America; and
    iii. Official Facebook Group of SEBS-North America.
    (Our other three online channels (LinkedIn, Twitter and Instagram) are currently inactive.)

    While we assume that SEBS-North America members are adults to monitor their own behavior, the Executive Committee of SEBS-North America reserves the rights of moderating online discussions on the above-mentioned platforms, if necessary. The executive committee might delete a post/comment if it is inappropriate.
